Inductees honored
at Innovators Hall of Fame

On June 2, the Mississippi Technology Alliance inducted 4 individuals into the Innovators Hall of Fame. Jim Barksdale, president of the Barksdale Management Corporation, received the Legends Award. Excellence Award Recipients were Fred Carl founder and CEO of Viking Range Corporation, Fred Haise, NASA Astronaut on Apollo 13, and Dr. James Hardy, (posthumously) who performed the first human lung transplant.


Leadership Mississippi heading to Biloxi

Leadership Mississippi, one of the nation's oldest leadership programs, is gearing up for session on the Coast, which will focus on Healthcare on June 10-12.

Governor announces 70 new jobs with HQ relocation

The American Contract Bridge League, one of the largest bridge organizations in the world, has announced it is relocating its headquarters from Memphis, Tenn., to Horn Lake, Miss. The move represents a $3 million investment by the organization and will bring approximately 70 jobs to the area.

Top students receive scholarships
at Education Celebration

On April 16, the state's top high school students were honored at the STAR Education Celebration held at the Jackson Convention Complex in conjunction with the Mississippi Economic Council's 60th Annual Meeting.


From left: Third-place - Jackson Academy's Bailey Hansen, second-place - Jackson Prep's Wendong Zhang, and first place - Laura Lindell of Jackson Prep.

Scholarships were entirely funded by the Kelly Gene Cook, Sr. Charitable Foundation, Inc. First place receives $24,000 over four years; second place receives $20,000 over 4 years and third place receives $16,000 over 4 years. All other STAR students at the Education Celebration received a $500 scholarship.

 MEC employee honored for 20 years of service

Edith Greenhagen, MEC's data and financial administrator, was honored for reaching a milestone of 20 years of dedicated work for the Mississippi Economic Council. MEC 2009-2010 Chair Mayo Flynt presented Edith with a resolution unanimously adopted by the board and MEC President Blake Wilson.


 General Dynamics wins $37M contract
to build Army vehicles in McHenry

The U.S. Army Contracting Command in Picatinny Arsenal, N.J., has awarded General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products an order of approximately $37 million to produce reactive armor tile sets for the Bradley Fighting Vehicle.

Owners Deborah and Osmond Crosby dedicated their Piney Woods Pellets plant with Gray Swoope, representing Governor Haley Barbour, on June 2 in Wiggins. Piney Woods Pellets will produce wood pellets to provide economical heating fuel for customers.

The spirit and legacy of Vice Adm. Samuel L. Gravely Jr. was heralded May 16, 2009, as Northrop Grumman Corporation christened the company’s 27th Aegis guided missile destroyer Gravely (DDG 107), in the presence of more than 2,000 guests.

Retiring University of Mississippi
Chancellor Robert Khayat honored

Mississippi Economic Council's 60th Anniversary Celebration and Annual Membership Meeting drew more than 2,600 on Thursday, April 16, 2009, at the newly opened Jackson Convention Complex. 

FOX News Business Commentator Stuart Varney delivered the keynote address and Signature Presenter Sen. Thad Cochran spoke to the crowd of business leaders. Also Jack Reed Sr., Past Chair of MEC and Bob Pittman, retired President of MEC offered a special tribute to MEC, honoring the Council's work for the past 60 years.
 
There was a special salute to retiring University of Mississippi Chancellor Robert Khayat, which included a special introduction by Aubrey Patterson of BancorpSouth, also a Past Chair of MEC.
 
State Superintendent of Education Dr. Hank Bounds provided an update regarding the On The Bus dropout prevention campaign. As part of this year's Annual Meeting, On The Bus held a session that included more than 500 educators and community leaders.

Morning Sessions Focus on Economic Development, Workforce Training
and Higher Education
The MEC Annual Meeting Momentum Mississippi sessions looked at how Mississippi can take advantage of economic development opportunities in the defense industries, and explored ways to continue to improve the state's workforce.
 
There was also a session featuring the presidents of Mississippi's eight public universities.
 
Many Annual Meeting attendees also took part in Gov. Haley Barbour's Mississippi Stimulus Summit, which followed the luncheon.

Phil Hoffman, President of InnOvation Seating Solutions, announced June 2 that the company will manufacture seating for hotels and assisted living facilities in the Westwood Industries Building on Glasgow Lane in Tupelo. The Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning announced in a press conference on June 2 that Dr. Hank Bounds, Mississippi Superintendent of Education, is the preferred candidate for the position of Commissioner of Higher Education and that Dr. Dan Jones, current vice chancellor for health affairs and dean of the School of Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, is the preferred candidate for the position of Chancellor at the University of Mississippi.

Forum brings together business leaders from China - US

MDA, the U.S. - China Chamber of Commerce and the Changzhou Municipal Government hosted Changzhou Meets Mississippi: Trade and Investment Opportunities Forum on May 21, at the Jackson Convention Complex. Hundreds gather for On The Bus update

More than 500 education leaders gathered to hear an update about On The Bus, the Mississippi Department of Education dropout prevention campaign, which is funded by a $1.5 million grant from State Farm Insurance. The meeting was held in conjunction with the MEC annual meeting on April 16.
