Honored at Education Celebration

20th Anniversary of Kelly Gene Cook Foundation Highlights Over $1.3 million
Given in Scholarships Since Inception

Marina Z. Joel, a Jackson Preparatory Student, was named the Top ALL-STAR Scholar for 2016. Joel has a perfect 36 composite score on the American College Test (ACT), combined scores of 144 and a grade point average of 98.94. She is the daughter of Siming Li and Jiange Zhou of Brandon.

Joel, was awarded a $24,000 Scholarship by the Kelly Gene Cook, Sr. Charitable Foundation, Inc. She chose Marsha M. Hobbs as her STAR Teacher. Hobbs has been teaching for 22 years and has been named STAR Teacher 7 separate times.

Joseph A. Layton, a West Harrison High School Student, was named the 1st Runner-Up ALL-STAR Scholar. Layton has a perfect 36 composite score on the American College Test (ACT), combined scores of 144 and a grade point average of 97.68. He is the son of Bruce and Becky Layton of Gulfport. The Annual Education Celebration program was held by the Mississippi Economic Council’s M. B. Swayze Foundation.

Layton received a $20,000 Scholarship from the Kelly Gene Cook, Sr. Charitable Foundation, Inc. Each STAR Student was asked to designate a STAR Teacher- the teacher who has made the greatest contribution to the student’s scholastic achievement. He designated Timothy A. Garrett as his STAR Teacher. Garrett has been teaching for 15 years and this is his first time to be selected.

James A. Grant, a Tupelo High School Student, was named Mississippi’s 2nd Runner-Up ALL-STAR Scholar for 2016. Grant has a perfect 36 composite score on the American College Test (ACT), combine scores of 143 and a grade point average of 100.27. He is the son of Russell and Hyong Grant of Belden.

Grant was awarded a $16,000 Scholarship by the Kelly Gene Cook, Sr. Charitable Foundation, Inc. He designated Pamela J. Cockrell as his STAR Teacher. Cockrell is National Board Certified and has been selected STAR Teacher 3 separate years.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Kelly Gene Cook, Sr. Charitable Foundation, Inc. scholarships for STAR Students and awards for STAR Teachers in Mississippi. Over $1.3 million has been awarded to students through the scholarship provided by the Kelly Gene Cook, Sr. Charitable Foundation, Inc.

Peggy Howard Award of Distinction

The STAR school with the highest number of STAR Students receives the Peggy Howard Award of Distinction.  Madison Central High School was recognized this year with 5 STAR Students.  This award pays tribute to her exceptional dedication, masterful mentoring and innovative outreach in education.  Peggy retired from MEC in 2005 after nearly 40 years of service as Senior Vice President of MEC and COO of the MEC’s M.B. Swayze Foundation.  Peggy passed away on New Years Eve 2013.
